A gateway to the Internet

CMC was the third in the world to create and then successfully market Ethernet Node-Processors, a computer networking technology essential for establishing local area networks. In turn it also serves as a gateway to the Internet.

Overview

Bob helped direct and champion Communication Machinery Company in the mid-’80s and early ’90s. Through Bob’s vision, the company was one of the first to create Ethernet Node-Processors and bring them successfully to the world market.

Communication Machinery Company also manufactured key-to-disk computer systems. Companies and government departments used these systems for data capture. In 1976, CMC developed a bit-slice-based intelligent terminal, which was both a front-end processor to the key-to-disk systems and a terminal in its own right.

With an 80% market share in a specific type of computer workstation, the company was sold to Rockwell International.

"Data moves. On the way it's organised, balanced, validated, edited, enhanced, packaged and shipped to a computer. Communication Machinery pioneered a new field called shared processor data entry - using main computers to cut the cost of data preparation by 30-50%."
